A way out west there was a fella, fella I want to tell you about, fella by the name of Jason Asbell. I only mention it 'cause some- times there's a man--I won't say a hee-ro, 'cause what's a hee-ro?--but sometimes there's a man. And I'm talkin' about Jason here-- sometimes there's a man who, wal, he's the man for his time'n place, he fits right in there--and that's Jason, the Programming Director of The Civic Theatre. . . sometimes there's a man. Wal, I lost m'train of thought here. But--aw hell, I done innerduced him enough.

TBC films that you need C at The Civic and Shoebox Theatres

The late Summer and Fall drought in quality content is taking a holiday for the upcoming holiday season and making room for a great slate of films to play out the rest of 2022 around the big anticipated blockbusters, ‘Wakanda Forever’ and ‘Avatar: The Way of the Water’. 

Quality award contender films are like fine wine and need time to breathe, which means that their releases start very limited and slowly expand, leaving us more rural folk without much certainty as to when we will be able to book them. However, although these films are all ‘To Be Confirmed’, we are committed to playing them between The Civic and Shoebox Theatres, so I thought I’d share details on what we’re looking at so that you know what to keep your eye out for when they show up in our weekly confirmations. 

This list is in the order of their initial limited release dates and not necessarily the order we will be securing them:

Tar - Renowned musician Lydia Tár is days away from recording the symphony that will elevate her career. When all elements seem to conspire against her, Lydia's adopted daughter Petra becomes an integral emotional support for her struggling mother. 93% TOMATOMETER

Till - The true story of Mamie Till-Mobley's relentless pursuit of justice for her 14-year-old son, Emmett Till, who was brutally lynched in 1955 while visiting his cousins in Mississippi. 98% TOMATOMETER

Armageddon Time - Written, directed, and produced by James Gray, inspired by his upbringing in Queens, New York, during the 1980s. After Jewish-American Paul Graff and his African-American friend Johnny are caught smoking cannabis, Paul is sent to his older brother's private school. Immediately met with prejudice, Paul's parents, including his grandfather Aaron, do their best to try and teach him about the strength of family and the generational pursuit of the American Dream. 80% TOMATOMETER

The Banshees of Inisherin - On a remote island off the coast of Ireland, Pádraic is devastated when his buddy Colm suddenly puts an end to their lifelong friendship. With help from his sister and a troubled young islander, Pádraic sets out to repair the damaged relationship by any means necessary. The Menu - A couple (Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult) travels to a coastal island to eat at an exclusive restaurant where the chef (Ralph Fiennes) has prepared a lavish menu, with some shocking surprises. 88% TOMATOMETER

Devotion -  An aerial war epic based on the bestselling book of the same name, tells the harrowing true story of two elite US Navy fighter pilots during the Korean War. Their heroic sacrifices would ultimately make them the Navy's most celebrated wingmen. 83% TOMATOMETER

Violent Night - An elite team of mercenaries breaks into a family compound on Christmas Eve, taking everyone hostage inside. However, they aren't prepared for a surprise combatant: Santa Claus is on the grounds, and he's about to show why this Nick is no saint. By the filmmaker who brought the world 'Dead Snow'.

Spoiler Alert - Writer Michael Ausiello embarks on a roller-coaster ride of emotions when his partner gets diagnosed with terminal cancer. Directed by Michael Showalter (The Big Sick)

Empire of Light - A drama about the power of human connection during turbulent times, set in an English coastal town in the early 1980's. By Sam Mendes (1917, Spectre, Skyfall)

The Fablemans - Young Sammy Fabelman falls in love with movies after his parents take him to see "The Greatest Show on Earth." Armed with a camera, Sammy starts to make his own films at home, much to the delight of his supportive mother. By Steven Spielberg 94% TOMATOMETER

Women Talking - Women in an isolated religious colony struggle to reconcile with their faith after a series of sexual assaults. Directed by Sarah Polley and starring Claire Foy, Francis McDormand, Jessie Buckley and Rooney Mara. 89% TOMATOMETER

Babylon - American epic period comedy-drama film written and directed by Damien Chazelle. The film features an ensemble cast that includes Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Diego Calva, Jovan Adepo, Li Jun Li, Jean Smart and Tobey Maguire. Set in the 1920s, during Hollywood's transition from silent films to sound films, the story follows Mexican-American immigrant Manny Torres as he pursues a career within the industry, starting as a film assistant.
