Year-end Thanks

Year-end Thanks

Wow, what a year it has been. We couldn’t have done all of this without you. Weekly digital movies, fundraisers for local societies, a few private events, and Nelson’s first Local Intelligence Gathering.

“Save Our Theatre” – ✔  check!

So what’s next?

Did you catch a glimpse of the hockey game on screen a few months back? How about the Skype call with director Joel Heath prior to the ecoSociety’s sold out presentation of “People of a Feather“? Maybe you attended our first-ever WebinarProfit with a Purpose” on Social Enterprise?

So what’s next?  More! That’s what’s next!

Thanks to your support and generosity Nelson now has its Cinema back. Better than ever. Digital.

During the Community Challenge we were pretty clear:  Digital means more than movies. Digital means everything.

Digital means if you can put it on a TV, we can put it on our screen… your screen.

Looking ahead, we’ll keep showing great films, new and old, Hollywood and Indie. Next week’s The Hobbit will be fun (costumes anyone??) Our Thursday night films will continue, and of course we’ll still be available for rent on Mondays and Wednesdays.

But a digital Cinema provides the technology for much more than just movies. How about visuals projected behind a DJ? Video game Tournaments? Live sporting events? Sonic Therapy sessions? Symposiums and workshops? Live at the Met Opera? More local fundraisers?

It’s all possible, but we can’t do it alone.  We are at capacity. The size of our team and the single screen just isn’t enough.

Rental requests are already stacking up with only Mondays and Wednesdays available. Members are asking for more variety in weekly movies which distributors just won’t allow on a single screen. Local promoters are asking to bring in live music acts on weekends – again, which distributors won’t allow. Finally of course, huge movies like The Hobbit prevent us from showing anything else during their week-long run.

To unlock the true potential of the Civic Theatre – to turn it into Nelson’s Cultural Media Centre – our next major step is three-screens.

Three-times the flexibility. Three-times the opportunity. Three-times the potential.

This will require a serious fundraising effort – we’ll be asking inside our community as well as continuing to find opportunities outside our community. We are grateful for any donations you can afford. All donations are eligible for a tax receipts of course.

This also requires additional volunteers – if donating money isn’t your thing, perhaps you can donate some time! What help do we need?

  • Our publicity gang need some designers, some facebookers, some storytellers.
  • Our fundraising gang need some envelope lickers, some introducers, some networkers.
  • Our computer gang needs some WordPress developers, some photographers and some graphic designers.

You name it really – the more help we can find, the sooner the Civic can reach its full potential.

We recognize in a small community like ours that many groups have the same needs – more money, more help, more customers, more time.

If the Civic Theatre seems like a project you could sink your teeth in to, please drop us a line.

If you can see the potential of making a donation, please give me a call, or donate online (charitable receipts will be mailed automatically).

If you just want to keep watching great movies and attending great events then please, above all, put your bum in our seats. Invite your friends, grab dinner out and enjoy a friendly, social, community-owned Nelson experience like no other.

Thanks again for all your support, and I hope you have a Merry Christmas.
