Playing on the split, Fri – Sun and Tues, Everybody Wants Some (rated 14A) takes 70’s high school to the 1980 college. With everything you’d expect from a spiritual sequel of Dazed, Everybody Wants Some, will leave you wanting more. And on the flip side of the this split, we bring you another from Jeff Nichols, director of Mud, the first film that the Civic played in 4D, with a real-life Delta sweltering heat in our pre-air conditioner days. Midnight Special, 4 out of 4 star rating on Roger Ebert’s site, “Jeff Nichols’ brilliant “Midnight Special” weaves relatable themes of parental responsibility and faith in that which is traditionally unexplainable into a sci-fi road movie, with echoes of John Carpenter,Steven Spielberg, and Stephen King bouncing throughout.
On Wednesday, we have a very special event taking place on our stage. Brought to you by The Mir Centre For Peace Lecture Series, Amir Hussain, A Muslim Scholar of Islam Responds to Muslim Violence is a unique opportunity to listen to one of North America’s most acclaimed scholars discuss the complexities of Muslim violence.
Finishing off the week, Thursday’s arthouse film takes us to the Amazon. The up for Academy Award for best foreign film from Columbia, Embrace of the Serpent, filmed in glorious black and white, tells the story of the relationship between Karamakate, an Amazonian shaman and last survivor of his people, and two scientists who work together over the course of 40 years to search the Amazon for a sacred healing plant.
