1 Dragon, 1 War, and a couple of stories lost in the bush.
It is weeks like these that make me wish I had multiples of myself to go and watch all of these titles, while my singular self can still perform my familial duties.
The first copy of myself would take my kids to Pete’s Dragon (G) for a magical re-imagining of the classic story with a touch of Truffaut’s Wild Child. It’s got Robert Redford for goodness sake!
I would send my second clone to see War Dogs (14A). I would tell him to leave the kids at home and enjoy yourself with some buddies. From the director of Old School the Hangover Trilogy, Jonah Hill and Miles Teller portray the absurd true story of two young men, David Packouz and Efraim Diveroli, who won a $300 million contract from the Pentagon to arm America’s allies in Afghanistan.
Step up copy number three. You get to take my wife and kids (maybe just the one. Don’t worry, I’ll babysit the 3-year-old) to see a beautiful documentary about simplifying life, disconnecting from technology, “getting lost in the bush” and reconnecting with each other in life’s natural unfolding. All The Time in the World chronicles the life of a family leaving the modern world behind and living by the seasons instead of by the clock.
And then finally, me, myself; I will visit the theatre on Thursday night to witness the latest film from the New Zealand renaissance man Taika Waititi, director of Boy, What We Do In The Shadows and numerous episodes of Flight of the Conchords. The Hunt For the Wilderpeople spins a hilarious yarn of a national manhunt ordered for a rebellious kid and his foster uncle who go missing in the wild New Zealand bush.
Up next: The Light Between Oceans (TBC) with Don’t Breathe. Raiders of the Lost Arc for a Member Monday movie, Raiders!: The Greatest Fan Film Ever Made for our doc Wed and dare I say, Captain Fantastic finally for our Thursday night movie.
