Zombie Walk, Godzilla and Week of the Dead. The Civic Theatre, for all your Halloween needs.
Deepwater Horizon (14A), A dramatization of the April 2010 disaster, starring Mark Wahlberg and Kurt Russell, where the offshore drilling rig exploded and created the worst oil spill in U.S. history, kicks off the week as our weekend/Tuesday run.
Wake up on Saturday morning for an 8am live stream of The Truth and Reconciliation Summit from Banff Centre For Arts and Creativity. Hear the insights from former National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations Phil Fontaine, Truth and Reconciliation Commissioner Dr. Marie Wilson, Human Rights Lawyer Katheleen Mahoney, and Principal of the Tsuut’ina Nation High School Jeff Horvath.
With the close of the summit, we turn the lobby over to our crack team of volunteer make-up artists to help complete your fall Zombie looks prior to the third annual Nelson Zombie Walk leaving the Civic Theatre at 3pm. Follow the talented Zombie New Orleans Funeral marching band through the downtown core to feast on the organic flesh of our fellow Nelsonites.
Following the Zombie Walk, convene back at The Civic for another disaster film, this one referring fantastically to the, not too distant, Fukashima accident in Japan; The king of the kaiju, Shin Godzilla, directed by Hideaki Anno, the creative force behind anime classic Evangelion. There will also be an encore screening as a late show, following Saturday’s Deepwater Horizon screening.
Sunday also presents a full slate, with The Nelson Civic Theatre Society AGM, starting at 1pm. For those in attendance at the meeting, you are invited to stay for a free 2:30 screening of Labyrinth, our nod to the late great David Bowie, and the inaugural film in our Week of the Dead film series, saluting some of the great artist’s who passed away so far in 2016. Matinee pricing will be in effect for everyone else.
On Monday, Halloween, we bring the intense film that stars the recently passed Anton Yelchin, better known as the new Chekov, alongside the scariest Patrick Stewart you will ever see on screen in Green Room (14A). Our second film in the Week of the Dead series, follows a DC punk rock band who is forced to fight for survival after witnessing a murder at a neo-Nazi skinhead bar.
And on Tuesday, Dia de los Muertos, we support the spiritual journey of royalty and send Prince off with a screening of Purple Rain. Playing as an experimental short preceding Purple Rain, we recognize Tony Conrad, American avant-garde video artist, experimental filmmaker, musician, composer, sound artist, teacher, and writer with his film The Flicker ’65; a seminal work that transcends viewing into an experience of the psyche. A rare experience, especially to see it on a big screen, so don’t miss the opportunity to see it.
On Weds. Ruin and Rose balances stunning skiing with a wild and hopeful journey into the forgotten lands of myth and magic. A surreal future leaves the world without water and consumed by sand: the Big Empty. When a young boy unearths an ancient relic hinting at the lost wonders of winter, he sets off in search of the ghosts that once called the mountains their home. Early screening at 7pm with a licensed, 19+ encore at 9pm.
Closing off the week, with one last Week of the Dead screening that is also a quintessential Thursday film, we bid farewell to the amazing Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami, with a screening of his 1999 film The Wind Will Carry Us. Irreverent city engineer Behzad comes to a rural village in Iran to keep vigil for a dying relative. In the meanwhile the film follows his efforts to fit in with the local community and how he changes his own attitudes as a result.
Coming Next: The Girl on The Train splits with The Accountant, Idiocracy (Member Monday), Eight Days a Week (Doc Wed) and Queen of Katwe (Thursday Movie).
