We have a pretty eclectic couple of weeks this round at the Civic. Where else in the Kootenays can you go to heaven, sabotage a spelling bee, exact revenge from abuses sustained from the residential school system and stop a war between the humans and super powered mutants all in a 2-week run on a single screen?
Opening this Friday we have an interesting juxtaposition of films. Heaven is For Real (rated G), based on a real-life couple whose son Colton claims to have visited Heaven during a near death experience, examines the divine, while Bad Words (rated 14A), directed by and starring Jason Bateman, revels in its irreverence. Bateman, a spelling bee loser, finds a loophole and attempts to win as an adult.
Our Thursday movie on May 22, Rhymes For Young Ghouls (rated 18A) delves into Canada’s dark past of abuses on first nations children in the residential school system. Jeff Barnaby wanted to challenge himself to write a story from a different perspective and thus chose that of a female teenager. We are also hoping for a Skype in with the director post movie moderated by representatives of the Sinixt Nation. Watch the website for confirmation.
Bryan Singer returns with the next chapter in the X-Men franchise, Days of Future Past (rated PG). Wolverine is sent to the past in a desperate effort to change history and prevent an event that results in doom for both humans and mutants.
We’re all that and a bag of popcorn!
