The Pitch (Dec. 5 – 17)

The Pitch (Dec. 5 – 17)

The Civic welcomes the Penguins of Madagascar into the deep freeze of Nelson (I know it’s only -9, but it’s been a long while since my time in the prairies).

Let’s face it, who was really in charge of the rag tag team of animals in the Madagascar films?  The King of the jungle? Heck no! it was the Penguins who got things done, and this time, they’re getting it done as spies.  Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private join forces with undercover organization The North Wind led by Classified (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch) to stop the villainous Dr. Octavius Brine from destroying the world as we know it in Penguins of Madagascar (rated G).

The following week, we have a great pairing of films to break up the season’s blockbusters starting Dec. 12.  with St. Vincent (rated PG).  Vincent (Bill Murray), a misanthropic hedonistic war veteran befriends a young boy whose parents have just divorced.  Also playing, Lou Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal) blurs the line of observer and participant in the world of L.A. crime journalism in Nightcrawler (rated 14A).

Bill Murray is the coolest dude in cinema and the actor most likely to crash your Christmas party.  Here he is walking slow motion with some fans in lieu of an autograph.  I love you Bill.

Speaking of the holidays, The Civic Theatre hosts its first annual Winter Celebration on Sunday, Dec. 14. Home for the Holidays begins at 1pm with games, prizes, a special visit from the big man in red (and I’m not talking about the Civic’s usher) and free screenings of the amazing short film The Snowman, and the timeless Jimmy Stewart classic, It’s a Wonderful Life presented here in restored DCP.

Finishing up the two-week run, Nelson’s own Freeride Entertainment presents their new film produced with Red Bull Media House in one of only 3 Canadian premiers.  On Any Sunday: The Next Chapter plays on Wed. Oct. 17 at 8pm.

Up next… The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

And thus concludes my pitch.  So, are you going to green-light this thing or what?

Cheers,

Jason.
