Happy New Year at the Civic (Jan. 3 – Jan. 9)

It’s New Year’s Resolution time and the Civic promises to keep fit and flexible to show more great films and be a venue to more great community events in 2014.

Stephen Frear’s latest is bound for Oscar contention.  Based on the 2009 investigative book by BBC correspondent Martin Sixsmith, The Lost Child of Philomena Lee, Philomena focuses on the efforts of Philomena Lee (Dench), mother to a boy conceived out of wedlock – something her Irish-Catholic community didn’t have the highest opinion of – and given away for adoption in the United States. In following church doctrine, she was forced to sign a contract that wouldn’t allow for any sort of inquiry into the son’s whereabouts. After starting a family years later in England and, for the most part, moving on with her life, Lee meets Sixsmith (Coogan), a BBC reporter with whom she decides to discover her long-lost son.

And for our second U.K. feature of the weekend, About Time, starring Bill Nighy and Rachel McAdams and penned and directed by Richard Curtis ( Love Actually, Notting Hill and Four Weddings and a Funeral) lights up the Civic screen.  Tim discovers he can travel in time and change what happens and has happened in his own life. His decision to make his world a better place by getting a girlfriend turns out not to be as easy as you might think.

Dallas Buyer’s Club originally planned as our Jan. 09 Thursday film, will be delayed by a week, so we will be playing Out of the Furnace, directed by Scott Cooper (writer/director of Crazy Heart) and starring an amazing cast including, Christian Bale, Casey Affleck, Zoe Saldana, Woody Harrelson, Willem Dafoe, Forest Whitaker, Sam Shepard.  Russell (Bale) and his younger brother Rodney live in the economically-depressed Rust Belt, and have always dreamed of escaping and finding better lives. But when a cruel twist of fate lands Russell in prison, his brother becomes involved with one of the most violent and ruthless crime rings in the Northeast – a mistake that will cost him everything. Once released, Russell must choose between his own freedom, or risk it all to seek justice for his brother.
