April’s film lineup is bright! Thursday, April 18 at 7:30 pm get the jump on Earth Day with an award-winning documentary film presented by the West Kootenay Ecosociety. A Fierce Green Fire: the Battle for a Living Planet is a sweeping exploration of the environmental movement, from the Grand Canyon to the Love Canal. Directed and written by Mark Kitchell and narrated by Robert Redford, Ashley Judd, Van Jones, Isabel Allende and Meryl Streep, the film has won acclaim at festivals around the world.
Silver Linings Playbook shows Friday at 7:30 and Saturday at 9:15. Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence star in this romantic comedy-drama that looks at relationships through the ups and downs of mental health, dance competitions, and football—with complications, and some surprising silver linings. The film was nominated for numerous awards, winning Best Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay among others.
On Saturday, two animated films for kids by acclaimed anime master Hayao Miyazaki come to Nelson from the New York International Children’s Film Festival retrospective. Ponyo shows at 4pm, a strange and beautiful adventure about a five-year-old boy and his relationship with a goldfish princess who longs to become human. At 6:45pm Castle in the Sky is sure to appeal to lovers of the Nausicaa series of manga graphic novels, or anyone who loves a great story. A young boy and a girl with a magic crystal race against pirates and foreign agents as they search for a legendary floating castle in this film, which won the Animage Anime Grand Prix.
