The Pitch (Aug 28 – Sept 3)

A final week of Vacation at the Civic.

Ricki and the Flash (rated PG), starring Meryl Streep, opens on the split with Ed Helms reliving his childhood Vacation (rated 14A) for the weekend/Tuesday run.

Meryl Streep plays hard rocking Ricki who gave up everything for her dream of stardom, but is now returning home to make things right with her family. Streep stars opposite her real-life daughter Mamie Gummer, who plays her fictional daughter.  Ricki and the Flash is under the capable direction of Johnathan Demme, Oscar winner for Silence of The Lambs, and director of the iconic rock film Talking Heads: Stop Making Sense.

I always knew that Rusty Griswold would grow up to become Ed Helms.  Chevy Chase’s iconic family road movie gets a new twist when Rusty relives his childhood trip to Wally World to bring his own family closer together.  What could go wrong?  Join the family Vacation over this final week of summer holidays.

Tangerine (rated 18A), Our Thursday film featured at Sundance received a lot of attention because the film was shot entirely on Apple iPhones with anamorphic adapters. The director, Sean Baker said the decision was largely due to monetary constraints, but also because of the immediacy the process would allow.  The experiement helped Baker and Director of Photography Radium Cheung achieve some nimble camera work, often shot while riding his 10-speed bicycle. “Probably most importantly, everybody out there has a mobile phone with a video camera and they’re out there shooting videos everyday so that allowed us to be inconspicuous and not intimidate first-time actors and people on the street…It really allowed us to shoot clandestinely, as well.” The film follows a working transgender girl tearing through Tinseltown on Christmas Eve searching for the pimp who broke her heart.

Coming next: a split of Man From U.N.C.L.E with Straight Outta Compton or American Ultra, Amy and The Diary of a Teenage Girl
